It all Starts with the Learner’s Permit
Each state has its own process when it comes to getting a driver’s license. The states are very similar when it comes to
learner’s permit requirements. Generally, guidelines include the following:
- Drivers must be at least 15 ½ years of age. Some states allow training to begin at 15.
- They must have completed, or be enrolled in, a state approved driver education course
- Candidates must pass a written permit test along with a vision test.
- They will need to pay associated fees.
- A parent or guardian must sign the application.
You will need to take specific documents with you to apply for your learner’s permit.
These include:
- Your original Social Security card
- Birth certificate
- Proof that you have enrolled in a driver ed course
When you have acquired your learner's permit, the real learning begins. You will need to spend a designated amount of hours behind the wheel with a licensed driver serving as a supervisor. This is an important part of your driver’s education for it is where you will get the hands on experience that will ultimately make you a better driver.
There are Restrictions
We told you that you would learn about rules and regulations, and there are a few associated with your learner’s permit. You will likely be limited to driving during daylight hours and you may only get behind the wheel when there is a licensed, supervising adult is in the car. You will find there are restrictions associated with both the learner’s permit and ultimately, your first-time driver’s license.
Getting From Learner’s Permit to First-Time Driver's License
Once you’ve gotten your learner’s permit, the next form of license will be your first-time driver’s license. To acquire your first time driver’s license there are additional steps that must be achieved. For most states, these include:
- You will need to have reached your 16th birthday
- You must have held your learner's permit for a period of at least 6 months
- You must have completed the driver’s ed course and your behind-the-wheel hours
When you obtain your first-time driver’s license, there are some things you will need to do. You will have to show proof of your identity and proof that you have completed your driver’s education course successfully. There are then only two things left to do:
- Pass your driving test
- Pay your license fee
Congratulations! You are now a licensed driver!
