Is the New Jersey defensive driving course officially approved?
Yes. The New Jersey defensive driving course is recognized by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) and follows National Safety Council guidelines.
Who is eligible to take a New Jersey defensive driving course?
Any non-commercial, licensed adult driver in New Jersey may take the course to earn an insurance discount and reduce points on their driving record.
Can I take the NJ defensive driving course even if I have no points on my license?
Yes. Any eligible driver may enroll and receive the insurance discount regardless of whether there are points on their record.
Can I take the NJ defensive driving course if I have a traffic ticket or existing points?
Our New Jersey online Defensive Driving course removes up to two points from your license and driving record every five years. Note that these points can only be removed if they are present at the time a driver signs up for the course.
Points can result in the suspension or even loss of one’s license, so don’t wait to get them cleared.
It should be noted that in some cases signing up for a Defensive Driving course will not necessarily result in the dismissal of a traffic ticket or help a driver remove points from his or her driver’s license. This is determined on a case-by-case basis; when in doubt, a driver should check with the court handling their case as well as the defensive driving course provider.
Does the NJ defensive driving course satisfy DIP or PDP requirements?
No. Defensive driving is a voluntary course for point reduction and insurance discount only. Mandatory DIP and PDP programs are separate requirements for drivers who receive MVC notices, and defensive driving does not substitute for those programs.
Can I take the NJ defensive driving course from outside the state?
Yes. As long as you hold a valid New Jersey driver’s license, you may complete the course from anywhere.
Does the course help new or probationary drivers?
Yes. Many probationary drivers take the course to learn safer driving habits and to qualify for the insurance discount.
Can commercial drivers take the course?
Commercial drivers may take the course for educational purposes and possible insurance savings, but point reduction does not apply to commercial violations.
